Halloween Word Play You Should Be Frightened... Halloween always makes me think of my Yale College days and the clever costumes my classmates would devise. My favorite was a couple who dressed as â€Å"Paradise Lost.† They each donned a boxy six-sided die and walked around holding a map. Yes, they were a â€Å"pair of dice, lost.† Over the weekend, at one of the workshops I take at Wright, I overheard a conversation between two women in the ladies room about their plans for the evening. One of them mentioned that she was going to a jack-o-lantern making party; the other lamented that she would probably not be able to attend a family event that night because of other commitments, but that she would try to carve out the time to go. â€Å"Looks like both of you will be carving something!† I observed. Wordplay is a big part of my life. I’m often the person to notice puns when they weren’t intended. Halloween is not required. In a conversation with one of my subcontracting resume writers, we were discussing my preference for keeping the word â€Å"I† out of resumes. Without realizing what he was saying, he blurted, â€Å"I’ll keep an eye out for that!† â€Å"No pun intended,† I responded. (Indeed, I was recommending that he keep an â€Å"I† out!) While any time is a great time for a good pun or wordplay in my book, Halloween provides the perfect opportunity to experiment with visual representation. Movie Analysis Of Slumdog Millionaire Film Studies Essay The object that I have chosen is a film called Slumdog Millionaire (2008). The movie, directed by Danny Boyle, received 8 Oscar awards for excellence in the fields like Direction, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, Original Score and Original Song. The movie is an adaption of a novel Q A written by the proclaimed Indian author and diplomat, Vikas Swarup. The movie is set in an Indian backdrop and the story revolves around an uneducated Muslim boy named Jamaal, and about his journey from the slums in a typical rags to riches background. The story begins with Jamaal and his brothers life in slums, and how they were left homeless after a Hindu Muslim riot which kills their mother. It continues with their journey to other cities and finally ends at Kaun Banega Crorepati (Indian adaption of Who Wants to be a Millionaire) where he wins the contest using the knowledge he had picked up during his impoverished life. Other than the several accolades, the film also faced criticism for the ugly potrayal of India and the abusive language that was used. In the following paragraphs, I would be analyzing the movie in terms of genres that it potrayed. Genre is a French term used for type. It is a term that has existed since very early times in cinema. Some frequently used genres are romance, crime, comedy , fantasy or actuality, drama, thriller, horror, suspense, cowboy, art/ independent(class note). Basically it is a repetition of certain features while making a film, that later act as a genesis for its identification under a specific genre. But gradually, it was realized that such a narrowed down approach of filmmaking and categorization lead to productions that were repetitive and predictable. Thus arose the need for genre films to be not just more of the same but also something different. This lead to an interesting phenomenon of categorizing the same movie in various genres like drama, action, mystery etc. Such movies are called multi genre films. It has been claimed that the more recent movies target consciously for genre cross-over. This concept of cross-over results in multi genre films that can be described as postmodern in terms of cinema. The amalgamation of genres leads to mixing of the already existing genres and thus generates new possibilities. The mixing together of genres is often referred to as bricolage, and such films are called hybrids. In bricolage, one can often observe elements of various different films that are grouped together. The genres identified are romance, drama and crime. The story told in the film seems to be a retold from the movie Salaam Bombay, which is story of a young boy Chaipu who is left homeless and lives on the streets of Bombay. The story is about how he survives by doing odd jobs at a very young age and struggles to overcome the harsh reality of the metropolitan that is Bombay. One can easily draw a parallel between Chaipu in Salaaam Bombay and Jamaals character in Slumdog Millionaire (Infact the first reaction of Indian audience to Slumdog Millionaire was its comparison to Salaam Bombay). The other elements of the movie such as the underworld, crime and Hindu-Muslim riots in the city of Mumbai have been portrayed in a far more realistic way in movies Satya [INSERT YEAR] , Sadak[] and Bombay[]. The ending of the movie is rather happy where Jamaal finally reunites with his ladylove and also miraculously wins the show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. These joyful endings have been prevalent in cinema for a long time. The theme of the movie is formulaic and seems to be a repetition of the previous movies based on the same lines. Genres can also be discussed in relation to industry, market and the audience. The industry makes film as long as there is a demand from the audience. The categorization of films into genres basically enables the industry to divide the range of movies that be made and thus sets a clear demarcation. The study of movies of different genres in the market gives a good idea of the response of the audience and thus on the basis of this study of most profitable response, movie of the same genre are made. A particular type of genre movie tries to specialize at the majority of the levels so as to maximize the possibility of profits. Analyzing Slumdog Millionaire in this light we can notice that the use of locations, props, actors has been carefully chosen according to the genre and script of the movie. As the movie is about a young, homeless, uneducated Indian boy and all the hardships he goes through, it was very crucial for the movie to use the appropriate locations and props. These films act as cultural products; which might carry the dominant and prevalent ideologies of the society in which they are produced. An instance of the imaginary solution in the movie is that the boy who grew up without any education whatsoever starts tricking non hindi speaking tourists with impeccable English and later in the movie locates his brother using a computer. This is just something fantastical which fills people with hope and optimism, and makes them believe that there is a solution all problems. This is something that definitely does not happen in the real world, but the movie came out at a time when the world was witnessing one of the greatest recessions of all time, and almost everybody faces a bleak future. At this time, the movie gave the solution to the society that it so much wanted to believe. It could be claimed that such films (genre movies) are not reflections of society but are particular perceptions of a society. How we see such films might ultimately be determined by whether or not recurring patterns and themes can be identified In Slumdog Millionaire, the director has made use of the emotions of audience. It is made in way that it draws sympathy from the Western world and re-affirms their age old opinion about India. The plot in the movie doesnt speak about anything that a modern developing economy boasts of (a common example of this is the fact that many foreigners still think of India as a land of snake charmers in US, whereas I am yet to see a single snake charmer in my 24 years of stay in India). Genre films sometimes challenge dominant ideas, question cultural values and this just leaves a more positive and optimistic effect on people as they do not find themselves helplessly tied to a societys belief system. In this context the film Slumdog Millionaire challenges the fact that an uneducated and lowly placed person in society can get as big a success as winning the mega jackpot. This theme subtly re-assures the audience that despite their short comings, they could also be the next Jamaal. Also, in an u nderlying theme of the Good overcoming the evil makes the movie adjust to the perception of the audience. The fact that Jamaal even after being embroiled in so many nasty incidents and pot holes of crime and vulgarity, remains good, and ultimately wins the jackpot. This plays on the audiences wish to see the ending that they sub-consciously believe in, and want to see on screen, even if that doesnt make much sense in reality. To conclude, we can say that Slumdog Millionaire is a movie that was packaged very deftly into the genres that were decided for it by the movie-makers. From the point of view of culture, audience and industry, the movie weaves itself perfectly into the landscape it aspires to project itself into. After finding several books with an array of different information I check them out, return home, and enjoy. English 101 Mr. Young 13 October 2012 Is Justice Really Blind? The United States of America bases its whole judicial system around â€Å"blind justice† but is justice always blind? Since day one, justice has been portrayed as impartial. Ronald Nikkel says the U. S judicial system is represented by an elegant lady holding a set of scales in one hand and a sword in her other, while wearing a blindfold.She carries the balances symbolizing fairness and the sword symbolizing power and authority, and she wears the blindfold, symbolizing objective justice for all people, without preference or discrimination, regardless of identity, wealth, power, social status, position, or circumstances (â€Å"Justice is not Blind†). However, is this always the case? In countless cases, the verdict does not seem as if Lady Justice is truly blind. No matter what is said, trial by jury has its flaws.The article â€Å"Justice is Not Blind† says, â€Å"It is not only the accused who can b e wrongfully treated by the justice system; victims also suffer the consequence of injustice when wealthy offenders with powerful connections simply get a slap on the wrist instead of being held responsible to face the consequences of their crimes† (Nikkel). Flaws in the jury system affect everyone. The judicial system needs to reformed, society has evolved over time, yet the judicial process has not kept up.Justice needs to be done without bias, where fairness is not just a forensic technicality and where consideration is the same for all persons regardless of race, religion, creed, or social standing (Nikkel). The most infamous example of our corrupt judicial system is the trial of Orenthal James Simpson also known as O. J. Simpson. The O. J. Simpson murder trial is one of the most controversial court cases in the last decade. In 1995 O. J. Simpson was put on trial for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her male friend Richard Goldman. From the outside looking in many people thought O.J. Simpson was clearly guilty. So much incriminating evidence was found. Douglas Linder says, hair evidence, blood evidence, fiber evidence, glove evidence, and shoe evidence was all brought in front of the Jury (â€Å"The O. J. Simpson Trial†). With so much evidence pointing to him, many Americans were certain O. J. was the guilty of murder. Mr. Simpson had something that many people did not, cold hard cash. O. J. had the ability to assemble an all-star defense team. The media referred to it as the â€Å"Dream Team†, it consisted of nine high profile lawyers.Douglas Linder figures Simpson's defense team cost between $3 million and $6 million dollars (â€Å"The O. J. Simpson Trial†). O. J’s defense team worked diligently to raise doubt about every piece of evidence that was brought forth, and it worked well. The article â€Å"O. J. Simpson Trial† reads, As America watched at 10 a. m. PST on October 3, 1995, Ito's clerk, Deidre Robertson, announced the jury's verdict: â€Å"We the jury in the above entitled action find the defendant, Orenthal James Simpson, not guilty of the crime of murder† (Linder).Many people came away from the trial with the impression that money will buy you justice in The United States. Money has bought freedom throughout history in the United States. Recently Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth killed a man while drunk driving. In article published by Globe Gazette it says vehicular homicide is a felony charge that upon conviction will result in a sentence of between three and fifteen years of imprisonment with no parole for at least 1 year (Magee). Three years is the minimum for vehicular homicide. Stallworth received 30 days in jail and two years house arrest.Stallworth was playing in the next Browns football game. The main reason Stallworths sentence was so light was, Donte reached a confidential financial settlement with Reyes’ family. What does this s ay for people who commit crimes and are unable to pay off their victims? Debbie Shussel says that, contrary to the trite adage, justice isn’t blind in America. It’s not blind at all. If you have the right dollar amounts in your bank account, you get a separate kind of â€Å"justice† applied to you (â€Å"Yes, You Can Buy Justice in America†). This was the most blatant display of corrupt justice in recent years.According to an article in USA Today, Donte Stallworth was extremely cooperative with authorities and remorseful throughout the process and this correlated with his sentence (Davis). Many people are remorseful and cooperative after taking someone’s life with their irresponsible actions, and are still given stiff penalties. It is clear that money will indeed buy you justice in the United States of America. It has been said that America has the best criminal justice system that money can buy. Paul Wright states, after more than 16 years in pris on I have yet to meet anyone who was wealthy when they were convicted.I long ago concluded that what people did, in the way of crimes, had no bearing on whether they came to prison Wealth is the determining factor (â€Å"The Crime of Being Poor†). The United States of America judicial system is extremely biased, a reform is desperately needed. Some may disagree with this and insist it is the criminal conduct of the poor that leads to incarceration but the evidence indicates otherwise. Paul Write wrote, the past two decades has seen over 100 people exonerated and released from death row after being convicted and sentenced to death.During the same period, hundreds if not thousands more have been released from prison after being exonerated of the crimes they were convicted of. The reasons for the wrongful convictions range from police and prosecutorial misconduct, incompetent defense counsel, fabricated evidence, lying jailhouse snitches and mistaken eyewitnesses, among others. Yet I have not heard of any wealthy defendants who were wrongly convicted and sentenced to death or prison as a result. Instead, wrongful conviction of the factually innocent seems to be the exclusive province of the poor (â€Å"The Crime of Being Poor†).This eyewitness account proves the point, people are being released from prison after the system realizes they were convicted on false charges. People of a lower social class are convicted of almost anything. Wealthy people are not convicted for anything, unless, they were caught red-handed. In a country like America, judicial corruption should not be a problem like this. Ronald Nikkel said Justice needs to be done without bias, where fairness is not just a forensic technicality and where consideration is the same for all persons regardless of race, religion, creed, or social standing (â€Å"Justice is Not Blind†).Most people believe this is how the United States Judicial system operates.
